My name is Barry White Jr. I was born in Queens, New York and Attended August Martin High School. While attending August martin High school I was enrolled in the Teacher Academy for students inspiring to become professional teachers. During my time at August Martin high school I made it on the national honor society from 2006-2008. I also received the August Martin outstanding performance in education in 2008 along with August Martin president Award and August martin Triple C’s Award. My interest grew in becoming a teacher in 2007 when I enrolled in the city scholars program that was offered to students who wanted to be mentors for younger kids who needed help. During this program I worked with younger kids alongside other members of the team and every Saturday we mentored the students, helped them with their homework and played different activities with them. This experience made it clear to me that I had a passion for helping kids younger than myself and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I decided to attend college because I knew that in order to stay on the path I set of becoming an educator I would have to attend college and become certified and without a higher education that would be almost impossible. Furthermore, I decided to attend Claflin University at of all the schools I looked at because of multiple reasons. One of them being Claflin is one of the premier HBCU’S in South Carolina and the Call me mister program here was highly spoken of as a great program for Males inspiring to be teachers. When I enrolled in Claflin University I declared my major as Elementary Education with my cognate in English. I knew to work with elementary school students in the 4th or 5th grade so I choose that as my major. While attending Claflin University I got involved in several organizations, in 2009 I was the Vice President of Claflin Men 100 a male organization that performed various community services off and on campus. I joined Saturday Academy AMERICORP foundation, a program where college students tutored and mentored younger students that were in the middle and elementary school. I also joined the Fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity Inc., and in the fraternity I was the Guide right director where my job was to setup and organize mentor programs in the local elementary schools. Along with becoming the Guide right director I was also voted the MOIP chairmen of the Membership orientation Intake Program, where my job was to successfully initiate fourteen new members in the fraternity and teach them the laws, history and values of the fraternity.
Through my networks at Claflin University I was able to partake in the Call Me Mister internship for three years back to back. Through this internship I learned to create and execute lesson plans for elementary school students throughout the summer. I also was instrumental in launching the SES program (Project Educate Me) in Orangeburg SC. I acted as the district coordinator for three schools in district five. Howard Middle school, Mellichamp Elementary, and Sheridan Elementary school. I plan to graduate in 2014 with honors and I plan on going straight into the teaching field and upon entering 2015 I plan on attending graduate school to pursing an advanced degree in education. Ten years from now I see myself as a principal in some elementary school, and twenty years from now I plan on becoming a superintendent and making an impact on education in that form. As an Alumni of Claflin university I plan on giving back through contributing to the alumni fund drive which goes toward books and scholarships. I also plan on opening my own after school program in the future and making an impact on the community where I will be stationed at.
